Fire Prevention

In accordance with Massachusetts General Law Chapter 148 and Massachusetts Comprehensive Fire Safety Code 527 CMR 1.00 (NFPA 1, 2015 edition) the fire prevention team handles all commercial permitting and inspections including fire alarm installations and alterations; automatic sprinkler installation plan review; rough inspections; cutting, blasting, and welding; flammable liquids and propane storage; fireworks displays; tank truck inspections; oil, gasoline, and propane tank installation and removal.

The department conducts yearly inspections of gasoline service stations, industrial and commercial businesses, and medical facilities. Our department also conducts inspections in conjunction with the Building Department and the Board of Health of all establishments that serve or sell alcohol. Quarterly fire safety inspections are also conducted of all schools, assisted living facilities, group homes, nursing homes, and hotels.

Our department handles a variety of permitting and inspections for residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. The following table is a guide for business owners and homeowners in regard to smoke and carbon monoxide detector inspections for the sale of residential properties, certificate of occupancy inspections for new and existing construction, installation and removal of oil burners, and above or underground oil and propane tanks. In addition, the department works with the Fairhaven Building Department in a plan review of all commercial and industrial fire detection and sprinkler systems.
