On November 18th, at 12:14pm, this department received a report that heavy black smoke could be seen from Sconticut Neck Rd. During response, additional information given that an unattached shed was fully involved and fire is extending toward the house. The Chief, Deputy Chief, Acting Captain, Engine 2, Engine 4, & Ladder 1 responded. Upon arrival, the fire had spread across the property to include a shed filled with lawn equipment, a 20 lbs propane tank, attached deck, and the north side of the residence. Mutual aid to the scene included; Acushnet EMS, a Mattapoisett engine, and a New Bedford Engine. Acushnet Fire engine provided station coverage.
The single occupant had already exited the residence and was uninjured. Firefighters did locate an uninjured cat and were able to get him in the care of Animal Control.
It was determined that a fire in an outside fire pit several yards away from the residence was the cause. Fire damage to the house is significant, the cost is unknown at this time.
Fire Chief Todd Correia would like to reiterate the previous order under the authority of the State Fire Marshal, that no outdoor fires are permitted at this time.
